This is the 11th tip in “12 Design Ideas for Your Southwest Florida Home” eBook, which is available as a free download.

A Fort Myers Mediterranean Style home is a blend of all the European countries that border the Mediterranean.

This home style brings to life all of the romance, beauty, and rich history of the European countries to the North of the Mediterranean Sea. These influences primarily include Italy, Greece, Spain, and France. American Builders coined the term “Mediterranean Style” to encompass elements that are representative of homes in these regions.

In a Fort Myers Mediterranean style home, you will often find elements such as:

  • Clay style roofs (higher profile like barrel style are popular)
  • Divided light windows, which create symmetry and interest (think colonial style)
  • Use of natural stones, granites, marbles, terra-cotta, or wooden beams
  • Stained wood work instead of painted

Fort Myers Mediterranean style homes also usually usually use simple, classic stucco and molding. In addition, paint will often be brighter colors, such as various shades of yellows, greens, and earthy reds that you see in terra cotta and natural stone.

Mosaic tile designs often embody the beauty of a traditional Mediterranean interior. This beautiful tile may be displayed on the floor, or as a kitchen backsplash. Sometimes it is highlighted in home accessories, such as a mirror frame or tabletop. In some Fort Myers Mediterranean homes, people will simulate the look of tile with a stenciled mosaic border on the floors, walls or furniture.12 Design Ideas for Your Southwest Florida Home 231x300 11: Fort Myers Mediterranean Style Homes

This style of home will also typically have smaller rooms, which are reminiscent of European style living. Windows are usually installed adjacent to one another, in order to create a cross breeze.
